Austin Climber Kieran Liner Dies in Matterhorn Rockfall After Emotional Final Call Home

A promising 20-year-old Texas alpinist, Kieran Liner, has died following a devastating rockfall approximately 11,500 feet up the Matterhorn in Switzerland. The Austin resident was scaling the world-famous Alpine summit alongside his longtime climbing partner when the terrain gave way, leading to a fatal plunge on October 27.

The tragedy cut short the life of an ambitious young athlete who had phoned his mother just 24 hours earlier to reassure her of his safety.

According to the Valais Cantonal Police, the accident occurred mid-ascent on the iconic peak along the Swiss-Italian border, prompting an immediate search and recovery operation high on the mountain face.

The Fatal Ascent at 11,500 Feet

Liner was tackling the demanding Alpine route with his close friend and climbing partner, Eli Hawkins. The two had established a tight bond through their shared passion for high-altitude pursuits, pushing their limits on technical routes.

As the pair ascended toward the summit, unexpected loose debris triggered a sudden rockfall across the pitch. Hawkins, who was climbing slightly above Liner, realized the mountain had shifted dangerously beneath them.

Hawkins called out into the thin air, but there was no response. After losing sight of his partner on the steep face, Hawkins immediately raised the alarm to Swiss emergency rescue teams.

A Haunting Final Phone Call Home

Just one day before starting the ascent, Liner reached out to his family in Texas. His sister, Precenia Newman, later recalled the heartfelt conversation he shared with their mother before heading onto the glacier.

“Hey Mom, nothing’s going to happen. But if something were to happen, I’d die doing what I love, and I want you to know that.”

Newman shared that her brother lived with relentless energy and focus. After moving from Florida to Austin, he discovered climbing in local bouldering gyms before rapidly transitioning to technical outdoor rock and high-altitude peaks.

“He could not be tamed. If he had something in mind, he was gonna do it, and he was going to do it 150%,” Newman told CBS Austin, highlighting his passion as a skateboarder, golfer, and dedicated alpinist.

The Realities of Alpine Rockfall Hazards

A widespread misconception among casual outdoor enthusiasts is that fatal mountaineering accidents stem almost exclusively from rookie mistakes or sudden blizzards. In reality, objective hazards like unstable rock formations present severe, unavoidable risks even to prepared teams on classic routes like the Matterhorn.

Shifting temperatures and natural freeze-thaw cycles regularly loosen granite and schist on steep faces, turning standard ascents into unpredictable terrain without warning.

Following the fall, Hawkins shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, honoring the bond they forged on and off the crag.

“Kieran was my best friend my climbing partner and my brother… It makes me feel better he died doing what he loved and I’m glad that I was there with him so he wasn’t alone.”

To assist with the complex logistics of repatriating Liner’s body from Switzerland back to the United States and covering memorial costs, his family organized a GoFundMe effort to bring him home to Texas.

✨ Kieran Liner’s passion for high-altitude climbing took him from Austin gyms to one of the world’s most demanding peaks.

📱 His family and climbing partners continue to honor his memory and fearless spirit across the global mountaineering community.
