Dylan Dreyer completely transformed Studio 1A by channeling television icon Barbara Eden from I Dream of Jeannie, leading the star-studded Halloween broadcast for NBC’s Today Show. Dreyer stepped out in an intricate baby-pink ensemble inspired by the classic 1960s sitcom as the morning crew marked 100 years of the network with an ambitious roster of historic pop-culture figures.

The annual reveal turned the Plaza into a vibrant time capsule. While the entire morning team went all out with prosthetics, custom styling, and retro wigs, Dreyer’s midriff-baring, pastel homage instantly became the talk of the broadcast.

Inside Dylan Dreyer’s 1960s Transformation

To capture the signature look of Jeannie, Dreyer wore a baby-pink bralette paired with matching semi-sheer balloon pants and pointed-toe pumps. The ensemble was finished with an ornate headpiece resting atop an intricate braided updo with blunt bangs, alongside a bold red lip.

Embodying the character went far beyond simply stepping into the costume. Ahead of the live reveal, Dreyer studied archival footage to master the titular genie’s physical quirks and comedic expressions.

“It’s funny because I grew up watching I Dream of Jeannie, even though it was an older show. You kind of need to watch it and take on those mannerisms. So even though I don’t have a dance routine, I still have to embrace the costume.”

Dreyer previously tackled character studies on the Plaza, notably teaming up with Al Roker as Marty McFly alongside his Doc Brown from Back to the Future. She also famously dressed as pop icon Pink, a bold ensemble that left her young son Calvin visibly confused at home when he questioned why she was wearing no pants alongside faux body ink.

The Reality Behind Morning Show Costumes

A common misconception about live television holiday specials is that talent merely slips into off-the-rack costumes minutes before air. In reality, morning show productions spend months engineering specialized stage garments that withstand studio lighting, rapid wardrobe changes, and active live demonstrations.

Longtime weather anchor Al Roker took a direct cue from late-night comedy history by dressing up as Gumby from Saturday Night Live. The green, oversized costume paid direct homage to Eddie Murphy’s iconic parody of the character.

“I was a fan of the sketch. Besides the fact that Eddie Murphy did it, I grew up watching the original Gumby, and the idea that Gumby was actually a Borscht Belt comedian, I thought was genius.”

Meanwhile, Craig Melvin took the broadcast in a distinctly musical direction by dressing as West Coast hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg.

“Who’s not a fan of Snoop? He’s a part of the fabric of America,” Melvin noted. “I’ve been a fan of Snoop since my high school years — maybe even before that.”
