NFL icon Jared Allen is officially calling an audible on his family life. While thousands of residents continue moving away from the West Coast, the 44-year-old defensive powerhouse is packing up his Tennessee ranch and relocating his family back to California to give his daughters the childhood he remembers.

The move runs counter to ongoing relocation trends across the country. Yet, for the former pass rusher, coming home is personal.

Allen made the surprising announcement in a video alongside Steve Hilton, a candidate for California governor, acknowledging how unusual his cross-country relocation looks from the outside.

“I’m one of the rare people moving back to the state of California.”

“I grew up here,” Allen explained. “I grew up in the Bay Area, and I have such fond memories of California, and I want my kids to be able to experience the California that I experienced growing up.”

Chasing the Golden State Lifestyle of His Youth

For Allen, the decision centers on the unmatched variety of everyday life in Northern California. He recalled days spent skiing in Lake Tahoe in the morning before heading down to Santa Cruz to fish by evening.

Allen was raised on a rein-cut horse ranch, an upbringing he credits with instilling a deep connection to the outdoors. He wants his two daughters, Brinley and Lakelyn, to experience that same energy firsthand.

“It wasn’t like we were affluent and had endless means,” Allen noted about his childhood. “We were able to have almost every experience you could want as a child.”

He pointed to the state’s natural environment and entrepreneurial spirit as elements he could not replace anywhere else.

“You have the ocean, you have the mountains, you have agriculture, you have such a vibrant food scene,” Allen said. “I remember California of go-getters, of doers, of innovators, and that’s what I want my kids surrounded by. I want my kids surrounded by people that are reaching for the stars.”

Tackling Everyday Expenses and Affordability

While his passion for the state remains high, Allen is clear-eyed about the financial realities facing local families. Many assume high-profile athletes are shielded from everyday economic concerns, but Allen pushed back on that perception directly.

He noted that a tank of gas was barely over a dollar when he first earned his driver’s license. The soaring cost of living over subsequent decades remains a key concern.

“Let’s make our car registration the same as what everybody else is paying around the country,” Allen urged. “No matter what political party you’re affiliated with, you have those everyday expenses that we’re trying to lower.”

His objective is straightforward: advocate for a common-sense approach that makes the state workable for regular households again.

From Fourth-Round Pick to Canton Greatness

Allen’s storied athletic career established him as one of the most feared edge defenders of his era. Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft, he quickly developed into a dominant force on the defensive front.

His relentless motor produced dominant campaigns with both Kansas City and Minnesota before he concluded his playing days with a final run that led him to retirement in February 2016. That sustained excellence earned him election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2025.

Now, his focus turns entirely toward his next family chapter on home turf.

💬 Trading low-tax ranch living for the West Coast is a bold move in today’s economic climate.

✨ Jared Allen is betting on his home state’s enduring potential and rich outdoor heritage for his daughters.
