Democratic nominee Dr. Amy Acton has officially won the Ohio gubernatorial election, securing 50.9% of the vote to defeat Republican challenger Vivek Ramaswamy. The victory delivers Acton 2,114,679 votes compared to Ramaswamy’s 1,901,248 votes (45.8%), according to the Associated Press.

The win marks a historic breakthrough in state politics. Acton, 60, is the first woman ever elected governor of Ohio, following former Lt. Gov. Nancy Hollister, who previously served an abbreviated 11-day term in 1999.

The historic result caps one of the most intense, contentious gubernatorial battles in recent history. The race took a deeply personal turn in October when Ramaswamy released a targeted political ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur.

Inside the Ohio Gubernatorial Vote Count

The final election tally confirmed a decisive margin of victory for the Democratic ticket across Ohio. Acton managed to secure a majority behind high voter turnout across the state.

Candidate Vote Total & Share
Dr. Amy Acton (D) 2,114,679 votes (50.9%)
Vivek Ramaswamy (R) 1,901,248 votes (45.8%)

The final outcome ended an election cycle defined by stark policy differences and explosive personal attacks in the closing weeks.

The Controversial Attack Ad and the Fallout

In October, Ramaswamy’s campaign sparked immediate national headlines after launching a political attack ad centered on Acton’s childhood sexual abuse. The ad featured her estranged mother speaking out directly against her character.

“Don’t let her become your governor. If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself. I love my daughter, but when I saw her lying about her opponent, it’s not easy for a mother to say this: that Amy has a serious problem. She is a liar.”

Court records previously obtained by PEOPLE document that Acton’s stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was charged with the rape of Acton in July 1978 after her biological father alerted law enforcement. The abuse took place between the ages of 9 and 12, running from December 1976 to April 1978.

Cledith pleaded not guilty to the charge, failed to appear before a judge, and became a fugitive in October 1978. He remained married to Acton’s mother until his death in 2004.

Acton confirmed she has not had contact with her mother since the courtroom proceedings decades ago.

“In the courthouse after they were charged, I went to give her a kiss, and she just turned her cheek away. That was the last time I ever saw her.”

High-Profile Reactions and Acton’s Response

The ad generated intense backlash from both Democrats and Republicans across the country. Despite bipartisan pushback, top national conservative leaders stepped in to defend the maneuver.

President Donald Trump defended the broadcast on Truth Social, describing the ad as “very powerful” and claiming the media launched a coordinated campaign against it. Vice President JD Vance also defended the strategy to reporters, stating he was disgusted by Republicans who complained about the advertisement.

Acton addressed the attack head-on during an interview with Spectrum News, firmly refusing to stay silent about the weaponization of her past.

“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about, who today just released an ad using my birth mother, who I was removed from at the age of 12 for severe abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse.”

Rather than derail her campaign, Acton leveraged voter support directly into an outright electoral victory at the ballot box.
