Keisha Lance Bottoms has officially made history as the first Black female governor in United States history, securing a landmark victory in Georgia against Republican billionaire Rick Jackson. Winning 55.3% of the vote, the 56-year-old former Atlanta mayor ended a 23-year Republican grip on the Peach State’s highest office, succeeding outgoing Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

The Associated Press officially called the contest following a razor-thin campaign cycle that captured national attention. Bottoms and Jackson, 72, remained locked in a dead heat across pre-election polling, making Georgia one of just four designated toss-up races among 36 gubernatorial contests nationwide, according to Cook Political Report findings reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Her win marks the first time a Democrat will occupy the Georgia governor’s mansion since Roy Barnes won his bid back in 1998, reshaping the Southern political landscape in a single night.

Inside the Historic Georgia Gubernatorial Race

The path to victory pitted two starkly contrasting figures against each other in one of the fiercest Southern political clashes in modern history. Bottoms, an attorney and former magistrate judge, built a statewide coalition focused on household economic pressures and regional stability.

Throughout the campaign, Bottoms framed her candidacy around steady leadership, directly targeting working-class economic concerns across suburban, rural, and urban counties alike.

Core Policy Priorities of the Bottoms Campaign

  • Housing and Healthcare Relief: Expanding initiatives aimed at reducing day-to-day costs for Georgia families.
  • Education Investment: Directing additional state funding toward local public school systems.
  • Agricultural and Rural Aid: Establishing targeted state support systems for Georgia farmers.
  • Commuter Savings: Implementing policies focused on cutting transportation and daily driving expenses.

Tackling the Polling Misconception

A widespread public perception during the closing weeks of the campaign was that Georgia’s gubernatorial seat remained an insurmountable Republican stronghold that would likely result in an automatic recount or narrow runoff scenario. Polling data consistently showed both candidates deadlocked right up to Election Day.

Yet the final vote tally dismantled the assumption of an unbreakable status quo. Bottoms broke away from the deadlocked projections by building a decisive multi-point cushion, securing 55.3% of the total vote share and proving that statewide voter turnout could overcome more than two decades of single-party control.

Metric Outcome
Winning Candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms (Democrat)
Opposing Candidate Rick Jackson (Republican)
Final Vote Share 55.3%
Office Replaced Incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp (Republican)
Historical Milestone First Black female governor in US history
Party Era Ended 23 consecutive years of Republican governors

From City Hall to the National Stage

Before launching her gubernatorial run, Bottoms built an extensive career across local and national governance. She served on the Atlanta City Council from 2010 to 2017 before stepping into the executive spotlight as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022.

Her mayoral term put her directly in the national spotlight during May 2020, when demonstrations following the murder of George Floyd led to unrest in downtown Atlanta. Bottoms drew national headlines for directly addressing demonstrators during a live press briefing.

“What I see happening on the streets of Atlanta is not Atlanta. This is not a protest. This is not in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.”

During that same turbulent period, she pushed back publicly against federal rhetoric, stating on CNN’s State of the Union that then-President Donald Trump should “stop talking” because his remarks were worsening tensions on the ground.

While her tenure as mayor included intense public scrutiny over tensions with the Atlanta Police Department and local crime rates, she chose not to seek a second mayoral term. Instead, she transitioned into federal governance as a senior adviser to former President Joe Biden for public engagement, stepping down from the White House in February 2023.

Her leadership resume also includes serving as Chair of the Community Development and Housing Committee, leading the Census Task Force for the United States Conference of Mayors, and serving as a Trustee for the African American Mayors Association.

💬 Bottoms now steps into the state capitol carrying both the mantle of a national pioneer and the expectations of a changing Southern electorate.

✨ Her administration will immediately take on the challenge of balancing executive priorities against a shifting legislative landscape.
