Former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding is stepping back onto the rink, preparing for a live audience performance more than 30 years after her competitive career abruptly ended. At 55, the athlete is currently training in Vancouver, Washington, for an upcoming showcase titled Tonya and Friends scheduled at Mountain View Ice Arena.

The return marks an unexpected new chapter for Harding, whose elite career was completely derailed following the infamous 1994 assault on teammate Nancy Kerrigan. She has turned back to the rink to reconnect with the sport that defined her early life.

“The love of skating is the reason why I’ve always come back,” Harding explained in an interview with local television station KOIN 6 News. “I just can’t walk away from it.”

Inside the Training Regimen for Her Ice Comeback

Harding began skating twice a week earlier this year to rebuild physical strength, agility, and stamina. Her focus has centered on rediscovering her footing and mastering routine elements after decades away from structured routines.

To safely regain technical skills, Harding reunited with figure skating coach Dody Teachman, who previously guided her through top-tier competitions in the 1990s. The preparation incorporates specialized support gear to protect against strain.

Harding’s preparation relies on a focused checklist designed to prepare her body for the December 12 event:

  • Twice-weekly ice sessions: Building up cardiovascular endurance and basic edge work at Mountain View Ice Arena.
  • Reconnecting with legacy coaching: Working directly alongside her longtime coach Dody Teachman to reconstruct routine habits.
  • Harness-assisted training: Utilizing an overhead training harness to practice balance, rotation, and landings without excess joint impact.
  • Show choreography: Finalizing an exhibition routine tailored specifically for entertaining a live audience.

Busting the Myth: Can Tonya Harding Legally Perform on Ice?

A widespread public misconception claims that Harding was banned from ever stepping onto an ice rink again. The reality of the disciplinary action is much more specific.

In 1994, following the attack orchestrated by her former husband Jeff Gillooly and bodyguard Shawn Eckardt, Harding pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution. The US Figure Skating Association stripped her of her 1994 national title and permanently banned her from association-sanctioned competitions as both a competitor and a coach.

That disciplinary action applies strictly to sanctioned competitive sports governing bodies. It does not prevent Harding from skating recreationally or participating in independent, unsanctioned public exhibitions.

Behind the cameras, Harding has settled into a quiet routine alongside her husband, Joseph Price, and their son, Gordon, who was born in 2011. In an interview with People, she revealed that she has worked as a custodian while embracing a grounded family life in Washington.

✨ More than three decades after the headlines that altered her life, Harding is returning to the ice entirely on her own terms.

📱 Her upcoming appearance shows that a lifelong passion for sport rarely disappears, no matter how much time passes.
