Jason Kelce Strips Down to a Traditional Mawashi for Sumo Wrestling Challenge: Inside His Ring Battle Against a 540-Pound Champion

Former NFL center Jason Kelce stripped down to a traditional mawashi loincloth to step into the ring against world-class sumo wrestlers in Houston, Texas. The 38-year-old retired Philadelphia Eagles lineman and current ESPN analyst tackled the ancient martial art for his YouTube series, “Kelce Versus,” testing whether a decade-plus of elite NFL offensive line mechanics translates to one of the most physically demanding combat sports on earth.

His first realization upon stripping down to the skin-baring uniform? Post-retirement eating habits catch up quickly.

“My belly is a little bit amped up. I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream this summer,” Kelce joked while securing the traditional garment.

The NFL Film Room Inspiration Behind the Ring Appearance

Stepping into the ring was not just a viral stunt for Kelce. The experiment was born directly from his professional football career.

Kelce explained that during his playing days, his NFL offensive line coach regularly highlighted film of sumo athletes to demonstrate leverage, center of gravity, and hand placement. Specifically, film of a 220-pound wrestler systematically dominating opponents more than twice his size left a lasting impression on the future All-Pro center.

“When I played in the NFL, my O-line coach used to show us film of a 220-pound sumo wrestler beating guys twice his size with pure technique,” Kelce shared in the video’s caption. “So I always wondered: does offensive line actually carry over to sumo?”

To answer that question, Kelce traveled to Houston for an intensive two-day crash course alongside several top international competitors.

Inside the Houston Ring: Nine Bouts and a 540-Pound Opponent

Kelce’s crash course in sumo was divided into two distinct phases. Day one focused entirely on mastering sacred rituals, putting on the heavy loincloth, and learning professional training mechanics. Day two raised the stakes dramatically.

Kelce faced off against three seasoned champions across a total of nine competitive matches. Among his opponents was former Emperor’s Cup winner Ichinojo, a powerhouse weighing in at a staggering 540 pounds.

Entering the ring against athletes nearly double his own playing weight, Kelce set an explicit, modest benchmark: “Nine matches. The goal was simple: win one.”

Breaking Down the Two-Day Sumo Experiment

The structured Houston schedule tested both Kelce’s physical endurance and his adaptability against combat sport veterans:

Training Phase Key Objectives & Matchups
Day 1: Fundamentals & Protocol Learning cultural rituals, wearing the mawashi, pro drills
Day 2: Live Competition 9 bouts against 3 champions, including 540-lb Ichinojo

Busting the “Diaper” Misconception: Travis and Kylie Kelce React

While mainstream American viewers often describe sumo attire casually, Kelce made a point to correct misunderstandings regarding the sport’s deeply sacred gear.

On an episode of their podcast, “New Heights,” younger brother Travis Kelce immediately teased him about the look. “You wore the diaper,” Travis quipped.

Jason was quick to set the record straight on the historic uniform and its centuries of tradition:

“It’s called a mawashi. It’s not called a diaper. This is something that’s been around for a very long time. So there’s a lot of… rituals and things that are specific to the sport that honor the past of it and honor the people that have done it or did do it in the past and are doing it now. The way they train, it was ridiculous.”

The outfit did not escape commentary from Jason’s wife, Kylie Kelce, either. Speaking on her podcast, “Not Gonna Lie,” she issued a hilarious disclaimer to viewers tuning into the episode.

“If you do check out the sumo episode in particular, just remember that when you see that little chicken ass, it is mine,” she joked.

✨ From holding down the Eagles’ offensive line to stepping bare-legged into the dohyo, Kelce continues finding new ways to challenge his athletic limits in retirement.

📱 Watching an NFL legend go toe-to-toe with a 540-pound sumo champion proves technique only goes so far when massive size takes over the ring.
