Jenna Bush Hager Shuts Down Her Kids’ Claims She Has a Favorite Child—and Reveals the Real Dynamic at Home

Jenna Bush Hager is not playing favorites in her household, despite what her older children claim. During an episode of Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, the 44-year-old morning host pushed back against her children’s running theory that her youngest child receives special treatment.

The daytime host shares daughters Mila, 13, and Poppy, 11, alongside son Hal, 7, with husband Henry Hager. According to Bush Hager, what looks like favoritism to an older sibling is actually just the everyday dynamic of raising kids across wildly different developmental ages.

Her daughters regularly confront her with accusations about seven-year-old Hal, but Bush Hager explained that the real equation is flipped entirely upside down.

“And I try to explain this because my kids are always like, ‘Hal’s your favorite. Hal’s your favorite.’ And I’m like, ‘No, I’m Hal’s favorite.’ Like, I come home and Hal has little heart eyes,” she explained. “The older ones, they do love me. I feel their love in different ways and they do need me.”

Tackling the Myth of the ‘Favorite Child’

A common misconception in multi-child households is that younger siblings receive preferential affection from their parents. The reality, as Bush Hager pointed out, often comes down to contrasting maturity levels and differing bids for connection.

While younger children naturally crave physical proximity and bedtime stories, teenagers and preteens begin asserting independence. That natural shift often leads older siblings to confuse hands-on parenting with biased affection.

“He’s the baby and also he wants to do stuff with me,” Bush Hager added, “Like, he wants me to lay in bed and read with him. If I was like, ‘Hey Mila, should we read in bed?’ she’d be like, ‘Smell you later.’ ”

The contrast between young children and teenagers creates entirely different daily interactions under the same roof.

Child & Age Expressed Dynamic
Hal (7) Seeks direct physical closeness, invites bedtime reading, and greets parents with overt enthusiasm.
Mila (13) & Poppy (11) Demonstrate growing independence, requiring parental support in nuanced, less hands-on formats.

Inside the Bush Family Ties and Milestones

Bush Hager frequently discusses motherhood openly, highlighting that her bond with each child evolves as they hit new milestones.

Family life also regularly brings multiple generations together. Bush Hager recently shared photos from a family gathering at the Bush estate in Kennebunkport, Maine, featuring several generations of the Bush family.

The gathering brought together former First Lady Laura Bush, 79, alongside Bush Hager, her twin sister Barbara Bush, 44, niece Cora Georgia, 4, and daughters Mila and Poppy.

Bush Hager also highlighted the distinct personality of her middle child during Poppy’s 11th birthday, praising her daughter’s humor and individuality.

  • Vibrant individuality: Described by Bush Hager as “just like the flower: vibrant and effervescent.”
  • Humor in the room: Acknowledged as “the funniest in any room” by her mother in a birthday tribute.
  • Distinct sibling roles: Navigating the shift from early childhood into preteen and teenage independence.

Navigating multiple age groups means adapting parental presence to match each child’s comfort level rather than distributing identical actions across the board.

💬 Every parent with more than one child has likely faced the “you have a favorite” accusation at least once.

✨ As kids grow from toddlers into teenagers, the way they offer and receive affection naturally transforms.
