Philadelphia Jogger Samuber Shikhverdieva Fatally Struck by SEPTA Trolley in Morning Crash

A 64-year-old jogger lost her life after being struck by a transit trolley in West Philadelphia, authorities confirmed. The victim, identified by police as Samuber Shikhverdieva, was hit during her morning routine near the intersection of 45th Street and Chester Avenue.

The fatal collision occurred around 9:10 a.m., according to the Philadelphia Police Department. First responders rushed to the scene, but Shikhverdieva succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:28 a.m.

Now, investigators are working to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly impact, leaving local commuters and neighbors reeling.

What Witnesses Saw at the Crash Site

The sudden emergency quickly drew the attention of nearby residents and pedestrians navigating the busy morning corridor. Emergency crews immediately mobilized heavy equipment to reach the victim beneath the streetcar.

“They started lifting the trolley, and that’s when I realized there was somebody under the trolley,” a witness told WPVI. “Just a solemn reminder it could happen at any moment.”

Another bystander told reporting outlets that Shikhverdieva appeared to be wearing earbuds while jogging. The witness noted she may not have heard the approaching transit vehicle before stepping into its path.

The Realities of Urban Track Safety

A common misconception among pedestrians is that multi-ton streetcars are loud enough to hear approaching under any circumstances. In reality, electric trolleys run on steel rails with far less engine noise than diesel city buses, making visual awareness crucial when crossing shared roadways.

Auditory distraction from headphones can effectively mask the low rumble of a gliding transit car, especially during heavy morning traffic.

Transit Response and Official Police Inquiry

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division has launched a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. At this stage, officials have not determined whether criminal charges will be filed against the trolley operator.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life as we investigate this tragic accident,” a spokesperson for SEPTA said in an official statement. “The safety and security of our riders, employees, pedestrians and the communities we serve is our top priority.”

SEPTA confirmed it has provided support services for the operator involved. To keep transit moving while detectives processed the scene, the agency halted trolley runs along the route and substituted them with temporary shuttle buses.

The deadly SEPTA trolley accident remains under active review by local law enforcement and transit safety personnel as they inspect equipment, review operator logs, and evaluate witness statements.
