Tom Llamas and NBC Nightly News have delivered an unexpected jolt to the traditional broadcast hierarchy, posting an explosive 32 per cent year-on-year surge in the vital 25–54 demographic to slash ABC’s long-standing evening dominance down to a razor-thin margin.

The latest national live-plus-same-day figures from Nielsen Big Data, published by TVNewser, reveal that the battle for the top evening broadcast is tighter than it has been in years. While ABC’s World News Tonight continues to hold the overall viewership crown, the ground beneath the legacy networks has shifted dramatically.

The demographic battleground represents the lifeblood of commercial broadcast revenue, and the momentum has swung decidedly towards the Peacock network.

Inside the Numbers: How the Gap Closed to a Whisper

During the key Monday-to-Thursday measurement window, NBC Nightly News commanded an average of 6.642 million total viewers alongside 1.018 million viewers in the coveted 25–54 age bracket. That performance secured a decisive second place while outpacing the network’s numbers from the previous week by 2 per cent in total audience and 1 per cent in the demographic.

The true story lies in the historic year-on-year comparison. The programme expanded its total viewership by 20 per cent and skyrocketed by 32 per cent among younger adults compared to the exact same week twelve months prior.

David Muir and ABC’s World News Tonight managed to defend their first-place standing with 8.356 million total viewers and 1.133 million in the core demographic. Total audience numbers climbed 2 per cent week-on-week and 12 per cent year-on-year for the flagship broadcast.

Yet a crack appeared in ABC’s armour: its 25–54 demographic audience slipped by 1 per cent from the previous week, allowing NBC to close the advertising gap to a mere 115,000 viewers.

A Direct Breakdown of Network Evening Performance

  • ABC World News Tonight with David Muir: 8.356 million total viewers (+2% weekly, +12% yearly); 1.133 million in the 25–54 demo (-1% weekly, +18% yearly).
  • NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas: 6.642 million total viewers (+2% weekly, +20% yearly); 1.018 million in the 25–54 demo (+1% weekly, +32% yearly).
  • CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil: 4.219 million total viewers (flat weekly, +14% yearly); 655,000 in the 25–54 demo (+7% weekly, +28% yearly).

CBS Remains Trapped in Distant Third Despite Internal Optimism

Over at CBS, the perennial struggle to escape the ratings basement rolls on. Tony Dokoupil anchored CBS Evening News to a third-place finish across the four-day span, generating 4.219 million total viewers and 655,000 demo viewers.

The broadcast stayed flat in total viewers week-on-week, though it registered positive annual growth with a 14 per cent total viewer increase and a 28 per cent rise in the demographic. Even with those gains, CBS trails NBC by more than 2.4 million total viewers and remains over 360,000 viewers behind in the core buying demographic.

Dokoupil, an alumnus of CBS Mornings who took over the evening broadcast earlier this year, addressed the uphill climb during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while discussing his CBS News podcast, Great Question.

“At the beginning, I felt like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” Dokoupil stated. “I was naively walking into this new neighbourhood, and it took me a little while to realise all the ways in which it’s not the morning show. A lot of people didn’t know my work or who I was. Different people are watching, and they have different ideas about what works, and everything I think flows from that.”

“Now, 10 months in, I understand it, I love it,” Dokoupil added.

The Battle for Linear Dominance Enters a Critical Stage

The tightening margin at the top indicates that evening news audiences are not merely eroding into streaming services; they are actively choosing between traditional anchors. Tom Llamas has injected fresh vitality into the NBC Nightly News desk, turning what was once a comfortable cruise for ABC into a genuine contest.

With live sporting fixtures and breaking national developments pulling fresh eyeballs back to traditional television, the small swings in demographic viewership carry multimillion-dollar consequences for commercial ad rates.

💡 The next sweep period will prove whether Llamas can sustain this pace and officially threaten David Muir’s multi-year streak at number one.

🔍 Viewers are clearly testing their options across all three desks as the broadcast formats evolve to meet changing news habits.
