The Gilded Age Season 4 Cast Shakeup: Every Star Leaving the HBO Drama Ahead of the New Season

HBO’s period phenomenon The Gilded Age is setting the stage for its high-stakes fourth season, but several familiar faces will not be returning to the grand ballrooms of 1880s New York. While staples like Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, and Cynthia Nixon remain firmly in place alongside new ensemble recruits Jim Gaffigan and Elizabeth Marvel, multiple notable actors—including Sullivan Jones, Patrick Page, and Claybourne Elder—have officially made their final bows.

Behind the glittering social maneuvering, dramatic romantic entanglements and sudden character departures have significantly reshaped the call sheet. For viewers tracking every society secret and boardroom takeover, understanding which players have permanently stepped away is vital before the latest chapter unfolds.

Sullivan Jones Exits as T. Thomas Fortune

Sullivan Jones, who portrayed historic newspaper publisher T. Thomas Fortune since the pilot episode, will not appear in the fourth season of the drama, per Deadline. After featuring prominently across the earlier run as Peggy Scott’s (Denée Benton) editor at The New York Globe, Jones logged only a single episode during season 3.

The on-screen relationship between Fortune and Peggy began strictly as a working alliance before igniting into a complex romance complicated by Fortune’s marriage. Real-world history ultimately dictated the narrative path chosen by creator Julian Fellowes and co-writer Sonja Warfield.

“I think Julian and Sonja kind of dreamt that Peggy and Thomas Fortune would be able to actually have a longer love story… I think they were hoping that we’d get to run off into the sunset, but history and Google [had other plans].”

Following that heartbreak, Peggy moved on with Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), with their season 3 engagement paving the way for Donica’s promotion to series regular. Beyond his time on the period set, Jones has expanded his television profile portraying medical examiner Cameron Clayden on the CBS drama Elsbeth.

Claybourne Elder and the Tragic End of John Adams

Broadway veteran Claybourne Elder will also be absent from the upcoming season following a shocking, fatal turn of events. Introduced in season 1 as a potential match for Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), Adams was quickly revealed to be in a clandestine romantic relationship with her cousin, Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson).

Although the pair parted ways romantically during season 2, they shared a tender reconciliation in season 3 when Oscar thanked him for his loyalty. Moments later, Adams was abruptly struck and killed by a passing horse-drawn carriage, closing his storyline forever.

Elder reflected on the emotional arc in an Instagram statement to fans, honoring the historical weight of portraying a closeted man in late-nineteenth-century high society:

“Getting to play this quietly complex man who was trying to carve out a space for love and dignity in a world that offered very little of either—was a gift. As a gay actor, I never take for granted the chance to play queer characters with nuance and humanity, especially in stories set in times that tried so hard to erase us.”

Since wrapping production on the HBO series, Elder has pivoted back toward music, debuting his studio album, If The Stars Were Mine.

Looking Back: Thomas Cocquerel’s Season 1 Departure

The cast changes are not entirely unprecedented for the sprawling ensemble. Australian actor Thomas Cocquerel originated the role of charming lawyer Tom Raikes in season 1, sweeping Marian Brook off her feet before his social ambitions derailed their wedding plans.

Raikes was driven by social climbing and wealth, leading Agnes van Rhijn to see straight through his veneer from the beginning. Cocquerel permanently stepped away from the series at the end of season 1 once Raikes broke Marian’s heart.

Life After Newport and Fifth Avenue

Since leaving the HBO prestige lineup, Cocquerel has secured roles in series like All Her Fault and the comedy Colin from Accounts. Reflecting on his breakthrough role, Cocquerel noted that the opportunity served as an essential stepping stone within high-profile American television.

Status Breakdown: Who Left vs. Who Arrives

The rotating roster of society fixtures reflects the expansive, ever-shifting narrative demands of late-19th-century New York. Patrick Page joins Sullivan Jones on the confirmed departure list, while recurring fan favorites like Nathan Lane and Donna Murphy have yet to receive formal confirmation regarding their involvement.

Actor & Character Status & Narrative Outcome
Sullivan Jones (T. Thomas Fortune) Exiting before Season 4; romance concluded
Claybourne Elder (John Adams) Exited in Season 3; character killed by carriage
Patrick Page (Richard Clay) Not returning for Season 4
Thomas Cocquerel (Tom Raikes) Departed after Season 1 finale
Jordan Donica (Dr. William Kirkland) Promoted to series regular for Season 4

✨ The shifting dynamics inside Manhattan’s parlors guarantee a dramatic shakeup when the series resumes its lavish conflicts.
