Barbara Barrie Looked Back on Her Secret Chemotherapy Routine as an Unexpected Career Turning Point
Oscar-nominated actress Barbara Barrie viewed her private battle with cancer as the ultimate turning point of her life and craft. Balancing intense chemotherapy treatments on Thursday mornings with demanding theater rehearsals in New York City, she pushed through exhaustion to stay on the stage.
Barrie ended her life through medical assistance at age 95 in her Manhattan home following a terminal cancer diagnosis, her daughter Jane Harnick confirmed. Yet even in her final months, her memories returned to an earlier era when surviving cancer directly revitalized her purpose as an artist.
The Thursday Routine That Defined Her Resilience
During an appearance on the series “How Art Changed Me,” Barrie reflected on navigating a rigorous chemotherapy schedule while performing in the stage production “After-Play” in the mid-1990s. Rather than stepping away from the spotlight, she engineered her medical schedule around rehearsal call times.
Instead of enduring standard, slow IV bags, she requested rapid injections at Columbia Presbyterian so she could quickly commute downtown to the stage.

“I had cancer … so I would go up to Columbia Presbyterian every Thursday,” Barrie explained. “Usually [people] get an infusion, but I was in a hurry.”
Because the “Suddenly Susan” star had to make it to rehearsals on time, medical staff adapted the treatment process for her schedule.
“Because I had to go to rehearsals … they would jab me. At lunchtime, they’d all go to lunch, and I would take a nap.”

Why Facing Illness Redefined Her Ambition
Many assume that severe medical crises force performers to reconsider their professional ambitions or slow down entirely. For Barrie, facing treatment revealed the exact opposite truth.
She discovered that her willingness to endure physical agony simply to step onto a rehearsal stage proved how much the work truly meant to her soul.

“I did [it],” Barrie stated. “I think that’s because … I want to tell the story. Not my story, but the story.”
That realization anchored decades of celebrated work on stage and television screens across the nation.
