Eagle Rock High School student Irene Maddox has officially been crowned the 108th Rose Queen by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. She will preside over the royal court and serve as the leading ambassador for upcoming community events heading into the 2027 Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.

Selected from a competitive field of applicants, Maddox will share the historic civic stage with six other court members representing schools across Southern California. Beyond the honor of the crown, each royal court member earned a $7,500 academic scholarship to support their educational goals.

For Maddox, building relationships with her peers became an immediate highlight of the rigorous selection process.

“Getting to know all of these girls, getting to meet my six new soul sisters, has really been a terrific experience,” Maddox said.

The Real Criteria Behind the Pasadena Crown

A persistent misconception is that the Tournament of Roses Court operates merely as a traditional beauty pageant. In documented reality, the selection committee evaluates applicants on strict benchmarks of academic excellence, public speaking, community service, and verified school leadership.

Maddox built an extensive extracurricular portfolio at Eagle Rock High School before earning the title. The Los Angeles Unified School District highlighted her broad campus footprint across athletics, academic clubs, and public service:

  • Broadcast Journalism: Editor-in-chief for the campus outlet, the Eagle’s Scream.
  • Student Organizations: Founder and president of the Korean Culture Club, alongside serving as secretary of Model United Nations.
  • Varsity Athletics: Captain of both the Varsity Swim Team and the Varsity Girls Water Polo Team.
  • Community Faith Leadership: Youth group leader at Christian Assembly Church.

Meet the 2027 Rose Court Ambassadors

Maddox will serve alongside six accomplished court members chosen from high schools throughout the region. Together, they represent the official civic face of the Tournament of Roses at hundreds of regional appearances.

Embodying the Spirit of ‘Welcome’

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses selected “Welcome” as the central theme for the celebration. The platform focuses on hospitality, community unity, and civic engagement throughout Southern California.

“The City of Pasadena has been so welcoming to me. I’m really proud to be able to be a welcoming figure for young people and represent the City of Pasadena.” — Irene Maddox

Over the coming months, Maddox and her fellow court members will participate in civic engagements leading directly to the iconic floral floats and stadium festivities in Pasadena.
