Emmy-Winning TV Icon Susan Saint James Dies at 80: Family Confirms Pancreatic Cancer Battle and Remembers Her Fierce Devotion

Beloved television pioneer Susan Saint James, renowned for headlining hit series including Kate & Allie and McMillan & Wife, has died at the age of 80 following a battle with pancreatic cancer diagnosed earlier this year.

Her family confirmed the news in a moving joint statement, revealing that the Emmy-winning star passed away peacefully on Monday, 26 October. She spent her final months surrounded by the relatives she deliberately chose over the glamour of showbusiness decades ago.

“She was generous with her time and energy, which she valued more than money, and instinctively drawn to whoever needed lifting up,” her family shared with People. “She taught her children to pause, be kind and look out for other people.”

A Life Grounded in Empathy and Quiet Resilience

Throughout an extraordinary career that spanned the golden decades of American network television, Saint James remained celebrated for her grounded demeanour and open-hearted warmth. Her relatives noted that she treated everyone she encountered with identical grace and undivided attention.

“She never met a stranger,” the family statement continued. “Every person she met became the most important person in the room at that moment, from a fellow board member to the clerk at the shoe store, who usually walked away knowing her entire life story.”

That profound compassion became her anchor during personal tragedy. When her 14-year-old son, Teddy, was tragically killed in a plane crash in November 2004, Saint James channelled her grief into sustaining those around her.

Her defining act, her family recounted, came during Teddy’s memorial service. Rather than turning inward, she delivered his eulogy structured as a bespoke personal note to each of her surviving children and her husband, providing them with words to begin healing.

From Breakthrough Stardom to Prime-Time Royalty

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Illinois, Saint James initially pursued modelling in New York before returning to California to launch what became a glittering screen career. Her rise was meteoric, quickly earning her industry acclaim alongside commercial success.

Her standout milestones on the small screen established her as one of the most bankable leading women of her era:

  • The Name of the Game (1968): Her performance in the groundbreaking drama secured her a Primetime Emmy Award, launching her into top-tier television stardom.
  • McMillan & Wife (1971): Starring opposite Hollywood legend Rock Hudson, she played the vivacious Sally McMillan, charming international audiences across five celebrated seasons.
  • Kate & Allie (1984): She starred alongside Jane Curtin as two divorced best friends sharing a home, creating a cultural touchstone that redefined female-led situation comedy.

Stepping Away from the Camera on Her Own Terms

At the peak of her popularity when Kate & Allie concluded its successful run in 1989, Saint James made the deliberate decision to walk away entirely from Hollywood. She chose private family life in Connecticut over fame and industry prestige.

“The biggest part of my retirement from films and television is because my kids are at that age now where they need to be the stars of our family,” she explained in a candid 1993 interview with the Baltimore Sun.

She added at the time: “They don’t need a mother who, when she walks in a room, they get shoved out of the way. I’ve had a much more pleasant life since that star has faded.”

The Strength of Family and Unbreakable Bonds

Saint James was married three times, first to scriptwriter Richard Neubert between 1967 and 1968, and later to Tom Lucas from 1971 to 1977, with whom she had two children, Sunshine and Harmony.

In 1981, she met senior television executive Dick Ebersol while guest-hosting Saturday Night Live. The pair married just 42 days later, beginning a four-decade union during which they welcomed sons Charles, William, and Teddy.

Following the 2004 aircraft accident that took Teddy’s life while he was travelling to Colorado with his father and brother, Saint James appeared on television just days later to openly thank the public for their overwhelming support. Her resolve in the face of acute loss left an indelible mark on those who watched.

She is survived by her devoted husband Dick Ebersol, her four children Sunshine, Harmony, Charlie, and Willie, seven grandchildren, her sister Mary Mercedes Dewey, and her service dog, Lola.

💡 Susan Saint James proved that extraordinary professional triumph never has to come at the expense of family devotion and personal integrity.

🔍 Her path serves as an inspiring blueprint for handling immense public acclaim with humility and facing life’s greatest adversities with unshakeable grace.
