Inside Patrick Stewart and Sunny Ozell’s 16-Year Love Story: From a Chance Brooklyn Diner Meeting to His Final Days

Patrick Stewart’s 16-year partnership with singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell served as one of the most grounded relationships in entertainment before the acclaimed actor died on Oct. 28 at age 86. Passing away under the loving care of his wife following a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia, Stewart spent his final chapter surrounded by family, music, and the woman who captured his attention across a Brooklyn dinner table in 2008.

Stewart was previously married to Sheila Falconer, with whom he had two children, and Wendy Neuss. Yet it was his chance encounter with Ozell that redefined the latter half of his life.

Their journey spanned more than a decade of marriage, unexpected wedding hiccups, and creative collaborations that reached right into the Star Trek universe.

Their story began without red carpets or film sets. In 2008, Ozell was working as a waitress at Franny’s, a popular and now-closed restaurant in New York City.

At the time, Stewart was starring in a staging of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the nearby Brooklyn Academy of Music. The limited three-to-four-week run had completely sold out before opening night.

When Ozell stopped by Stewart’s table to offer complimentary desserts, she mentioned how badly she had wanted to see the production. Stewart took an uncharacteristic step: he gave her his phone number to secure show tickets, later noting it was the only time in his life he had ever handed his number to someone like that.

Ozell attended the show, joined him backstage, and went out for dinner afterward. That single evening launched a relationship that Stewart frequently credited with keeping him grounded and intellectually challenged.

“I’ve never met anyone like her before. She is so smart and so informed. And her intellectual accomplishments are extraordinary. She remembers everything.”

Two Ceremonies and an Ian McKellen Wedding Mishap

After dating for several years, the pair officially wed on Sept. 7, 2013, in Ozell’s home state of Nevada. Stewart turned to his longtime friend and X-Men co-star Ian McKellen to officiate the ceremony.

However, the couple ran into an unexpected legal hurdle. Nevada officials did not recognize McKellen’s ordination credentials, rendering the state ceremony legally incomplete.

To resolve the issue, the couple held an impromptu second ceremony at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. McKellen officiated once again, finally making the union official under California law.

In September 2024, the couple celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary. Stewart marked the day publicly, writing that Ozell made “everything better and brighter.”

Myth vs. Reality: Sunny Ozell’s Independent Career

A frequent public misconception was that Ozell existed purely on the periphery of Stewart’s acting career. In reality, **Sunny Ozell** forged a dedicated path as a singer-songwriter with distinct commercial projects.

  • Debut Album: Released Take It with Me in 2015.
  • Sophomore Release: Debuted her second studio album, Overnight Lows, in 2020.
  • On-Screen Musical Cameo: Performed her track “Take You Down” live on stage with her band during a dramatic season 2 episode of Star Trek: Picard in April 2022.

A Morning Scare and a Golden Globe Surprise

Beyond red-carpet events, their private moments often blended humor with career milestones. When Stewart earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2016 for his work on the comedy series Blunt Talk, Ozell was the first to find out.

The couple was vacationing in Jamaica when Stewart heard what sounded like a terrified shriek coming from the bedroom early in the morning.

Assuming a large spider had threatened his wife, Stewart rushed into the room, only to find Ozell awake on her device. She had discovered the award nominations hours before the couple expected them to go live.
