Fresh off a divorce from his first wife, Diandra Luker, Douglas was actively playing the field when he began courting Zeta-Jones. However, the Welsh actress made it clear that casual dating was completely off the table.

According to Douglas, Zeta-Jones, 57, demanded absolute clarity before taking things any further. She gave him an uncompromising choice that required immediate action on his part.

“When I courted Catherine, she told me, ‘If we are doing this, you need to clean your act up.’ I was divorced and seeing some other people at the time, so I had to call five women to break things off.”

In his memoir, the actor details how Zeta-Jones acknowledged his status as a newly single man coming out of a long marriage, yet firmly drew the line. She stated bluntly that she was not interested in being part of a roster.

“‘I’m not interested in dating you if you’re dating other people. You can either continue with them or end it and be with me,’” Douglas recalled her telling him. His reaction was instant: “I told her wait here I have to make five quick calls. ‘Five? You have to make five calls?’ ”

Rather than including these details indiscriminately, co-writer Shane Salerno revealed that Douglas personally contacted the women to ask for their consent before putting the stories in print.

“I didn’t name anybody for the sake of notches on your holster or something like that. These are people that I’ve had relationships with in my life.”

“I’m 82! I thought it was probably time,” Douglas said. He pointed to his father, Kirk Douglas, who authored nine books, as the inspiration for compiling his own unvarnished story.

“It was fabulous going back. I had forgotten so much,” he added. “There were so many stories about the movies I have made but then the producer in me took over and I thought, ‘Let’s just go for the dirt!’ ”
