Ted Bundy Fathered a Child on Death Row: The Truth About His Only Daughter Rosa and Where She Disappeared

Convicted serial killer Ted Bundy fathered his only known biological child, a daughter named Rosa Bundy, while locked inside a Florida prison awaiting execution. Conceived behind bars and born on Oct. 24, 1982, Rosa vanished into complete anonymity decades ago after her mother abruptly cut off all communication with the murderer.

Bundy confessed to killing at least 30 women and young girls across seven states between 1974 and 1978. While his violent crimes horrified the country, the birth of his daughter and her subsequent disappearance from the public eye remain one of the most enigmatic chapters of his life.

Boone and Bundy’s relationship eventually shattered when the reality of his monstrous acts became impossible to deny. But how did a condemned killer conceive a child in a high-security facility, and what actually happened to Rosa after Bundy went to the electric chair?

The Shocking Courtroom Marriage Behind Rosa Bundy’s Birth

Rosa’s mother was Carole Ann Boone, a former coworker who met Bundy in May 1974 at the Department of Emergency Services in Olympia, Washington. At the time, Bundy was dating Elizabeth Kloepfer, while Boone was navigating a divorce from her second husband.

The pair started as close friends before the dynamic shifted dramatically into romance after Bundy landed behind bars. Boone stood firmly by his side, moving with her teenage son Jamey from Washington to Florida to attend his high-profile trials.

The prison chaplain refused to marry the couple, and attorneys declined to assist with nuptials through the mail. Bundy bypassed prison administrators entirely by exploiting an obscure Florida statute during his capital murder trial.

On Feb. 9, 1980—just two days after his conviction for the murder of 12-year-old Kimberly Dianne Leach—Bundy acted as his own attorney during the penalty phase. He brought a notary public into the gallery, summoned Boone to the witness stand as a character witness, and declared their vows in open court before the judge.

“Do you want to marry me?” Bundy asked on the stand. Boone replied, “Yes,” prompting Bundy to state, “And I do hereby marry you.”

The impromptu courtroom exchange constituted a legally binding marriage in Florida. Roughly two years later, against all institutional odds, Boone gave birth to their daughter, Rosa Bundy.

Growing Up in the Shadow of Death Row

Boone and Rosa lived under severe financial strain in Gainesville, Florida, remaining near the prison during Bundy’s incarceration. While public records about Rosa’s childhood remain minimal, she regularly visited her father inside the facility during her earliest years.

Archival materials featured in the docuseries Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer revealed a childhood marker drawing from Rosa featuring the handwritten phrase: “I love you Daddy.”

The Myth of Conjugal Visits

A widespread misconception suggests that Florida correctional facilities granted Bundy special conjugal visit privileges. Official policies strictly barred conjugal visits for capital offenders on death row.

The conception of Rosa occurred covertly during standard contact visits, slipping past institutional supervision. Incarcerated under four separate death sentences, Bundy leveraged every administrative loophole available while Boone continued defending his innocence.

By 1986, Boone was growing exhausted by Bundy’s erratic behavior, mood swings, and demanding letters. The ultimate breaking point arrived when Bundy indirectly confirmed his guilt over the phone.

In a desperate attempt to delay his execution, Bundy asked Boone if he should begin disclosing where he hidden victims’ remains. Boone’s close confidante, Diane Smith, recounted the devastation of that moment.

“That was his way of telling her — that there were bodies that he knew about and that he had actually killed all those people. That call was just devastating for her,” Smith revealed. “She was really angry.”

Boone immediately divorced Bundy, severed all communication, and refused to let him see or speak with Rosa. When Bundy was executed on Jan. 24, 1989, neither Boone nor Rosa was present to say goodbye.

Following Bundy’s execution, Boone relocated her family away from Florida to construct a completely private existence. Renowned true-crime author Ann Rule, who worked alongside Bundy prior to his arrests and wrote The Stranger Beside Me, actively supported their desire for solitude.

Rule maintained that she purposely avoided tracking Rosa’s whereabouts to shield her from invasive public scrutiny, stating only that Rosa had grown into a capable adult. Reports indicate that Rosa may have changed her name to detach herself from the serial killer’s legacy, though her modern identity has never been publicly disclosed.

Boone passed away in 2018 at a retirement home in Seattle. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies still resolve cold cases tied to Bundy’s murderous spree, including investigators linking him to the murder of Melissa Ann Smith through DNA and circumstantial evidence via the Summit County Sheriff’s Office in Utah.

💬 Rosa Bundy remains completely insulated from the true-crime media spotlight, maintaining the anonymity her mother fought to establish decades ago.

✨ Her total absence from public life serves as a rare example of absolute privacy achieved in the modern digital era.
