5.9 Million Bodum French Presses Recalled Across the US After Dozens of Burn Injuries Linked to Everyday Kitchen Spoons

Nearly 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers have been recalled nationwide after federal safety regulators warned that their glass carafes can unexpectedly shatter during use, triggering severe burn injuries. The nationwide alert covers millions of units sold across major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon.

According to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the problem stems from a common morning habit: stirring coffee grounds with a metal utensil. Contact between metal spoons and the glass carafe can create micro-cracks or weaken the material, causing the hot press to fail under pressure.

The company has documented 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during active use, resulting in at least 48 consumer burn injuries across the country.

The Hidden Kitchen Hazard: Why the Glass Gives Way

A widespread assumption among coffee drinkers is that sudden carafe failures are triggered by boiling water temperatures alone. In reality, thermal shock is rarely the sole trigger in these incidents.

Using a metal spoon to agitate the grounds strikes the inner glass wall, creating tiny scratches or invisible fractures. Once weakened, the carafe cannot withstand standard brewing pressure, causing hot liquid and fractured shards to burst outward.

“We take any reports of injury extremely seriously,” Bodum USA stated regarding the voluntary recall.

To eliminate this failure point, Bodum announced that future production runs will include a dedicated plastic spoon along with updated warning labels permanently affixed to packaging and units.

Which Bodum Models Are Included in the Recall?

The safety recall affects millions of 8-cup and 12-cup units equipped with replaceable glass carafes, spanning several popular product lines sold between $15 and $65.

Affected Product Lines

  • Bistro and Brazil
  • Caffettiera and Chambord
  • Crema and Java
  • Jesper and Kenya

Most affected units feature the Bodum brand name stamped into the metal or plastic frame, inner lid, or engraved directly into the glass carafe itself.

What You Need to Do Right Now

If you own an affected Bodum French press, take immediate steps to safeguard your morning routine before brewing another cup:

  1. Stop using metal utensils: Never insert metal spoons, knives, or forks into the glass carafe to agitate grounds or clean out residue.
  2. Inspect the carafe: Carefully examine the entire glass body under bright light for hairline fractures, scratches, or chips. If damage is visible, stop using the carafe immediately.
  3. Claim your free replacement kit: Visit Bodum’s official recall inquiry portal to request a free plastic stirring spoon and adhesive safety warning label.

Bodum noted that carafe failure rates remain low compared to the tens of millions of units distributed over decades, but stressed that strict adherence to non-metal utensils is essential to prevent severe scalding.
