Cory Wharton Drops Out of the New York City Marathon After Daughter Mila Rushed into Emergency Surgery

Cory Wharton was forced to pull out of the New York City Marathon at the last minute after his six-year-old daughter, Mila, suffered a broken arm that required immediate surgery. The 35-year-old star of MTV‘s The Challenge had spent months preparing for the 26.2-mile run, but stepped aside without hesitation when the medical emergency struck his household.

The sudden family crisis came during an already overwhelming medical stretch for the father of three. Just days before Mila’s accident, his youngest daughter, Maya, underwent another procedure for a lifelong congenital heart defect.

Wharton broke the news directly to fans, sharing an honest look at the emotional and physical toll the back-to-back family emergencies have taken on him.

How Mila’s Urgent Surgery Halted Marathon Weekend

Mila’s injury required immediate surgical treatment, bringing a sudden halt to race travel. Despite the physical trauma, Wharton revealed that his six-year-old displayed incredible resilience during the scary ordeal.

“Mila ended up breaking her arm and had to have surgery yesterday. As a dad, there’s nothing worse than seeing your babies in pain. but she handled it with grace , we went trick-or-treating & carved pumpkins. She did it all one hand.”

Stepping away from the marathon meant shelving months of grueling endurance prep. Even so, Wharton made it clear that remaining by his daughter’s side through recovery outweighed any athletic milestone.

“Right now, my family needs me, and that’s exactly where I’m supposed to be,” he told followers, emphasizing that he intends to take each unexpected challenge one day at a time.

A Grueling Month of Family Health Battles

Mila’s broken arm compounded an already emotionally exhausting season for the Wharton family. His four-year-old daughter, Maya, has been fighting serious medical issues since birth.

Maya’s Ongoing Fight with Congenital Heart Disease

Maya was born in June 2022 with tricuspid atresia, a serious congenital heart defect. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this condition occurs when the tricuspid valve fails to develop, disrupting standard blood circulation through the heart and requiring surgical interventions.

Just prior to Mila’s arm injury, Maya completed another procedure in the cardiac catheterization lab. Doctors successfully coiled off several collateral blood vessels to help stabilize and enhance her oxygen saturation levels.

“6 CATH lab procedures. 2 Open-heart surgeries. And a battle that never really ends. Yesterday, Maya went through another heart procedure, and I’m just so thankful that everything went well.”

Balancing Public Commitments and Family Crises

Public figures often appear to have entirely uninterrupted schedules, but Wharton’s abrupt cancellation highlights the harsh realities of balancing demanding professional routines with intense family caretaking. Before being sidelined, Wharton leveraged his marathon platform to raise over $12,000 to fund congenital heart defect research.

Wharton—who is also father to eight-year-old daughter Ryder—admitted that the emotional weight of recent weeks pushed him to a mental breaking point.

Rather than hiding the emotional strain, Wharton chose transparency, reminding fans that behind curated athletic goals, real life can shift priorities in an instant.

💬 Balancing high-stakes training with unexpected family crises tests even the strongest athletes.
