Kristen Bell Reveals Terrifying ‘Near-Death’ Ordeal After Eight-Foot Waves Submerged Netflix Crew on Nobody Wants This Set
Hollywood star Kristen Bell has revealed she survived a terrifying “near-death” ordeal alongside ten crew members after being battered by towering eight-foot waves whilst filming the hit Netflix comedy series Nobody Wants This.
The harrowing incident unfolded in open water during the production of the show’s third season, transforming what was intended to be a routine beach shoot into a chaotic fight against the tide.
Appearing on her husband Dax Shepard’s popular Armchair Expert podcast, Bell candidly unpacked the moments when coastal filming spiralled into genuine danger.

A Routine Ocean Sequence Turns Perilous
Bell, who portrays outspoken podcaster Joanne Williams opposite Adam Brody’s progressive rabbi Noah Roklov, was instructed to venture into the surf for a pivotal scene.
Joined in the podcast studio by co-stars Brody, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons, the 46-year-old actress explained that the sequence required her character to appear completely unclad.
“I had to pretend to be nude, so I’m wearing a scuba suit from here down,” Bell explained, noting that the logistical demands of the shoot meant wading deep into the ocean swell.

“I had to go out to at least where my sternum was, and I went out with, I think, nine or ten crew members,” she said. Production had implemented a strict safety protocol, securing one-for-one stunt coverage so that every technician and performer had dedicated support.
Yet even with professional safety divers deployed alongside the cast, the sheer power of the incoming swell proved almost impossible to control.
Chaos in the Surf: Cameras Lost Beneath the Swell
As the tide surged, Bell attempted to deliver her scripted lines amidst mounting turbulence.
“Amid the mayhem and the eight-foot waves, I remember trying to speak my Hebrew before dunking myself until the wave eventually crashes,” she stated.
Seconds before impact, the calm on set completely shattered.

“Just before it’s about to crash, all the stunt people start screaming,” Bell recounted. Two stunt professionals hoisted the actress out of the water just as the crushing swell broke over the unit.
The sequence of events was severe:
- Emergency interventions: Stunt specialists physically drove crew members down into the seabed to prevent them from being swept out to sea.
- Direct impact: The production’s primary “A” camera operator, Aaron, took the full force of the surf and was pummelled beneath the surface.
- Equipment destruction: Both high-end digital cinema cameras were completely submerged in the saltwater wash.
- Extreme temperatures: Bell described the coastal water as bitterly cold, escalating the physical shock for those in the ocean.

The Refusal and the Final Cut
Despite the harrowing submersion, the production team was not yet satisfied with the take.
When the director informed Bell that the technical crew had failed to secure the necessary footage, they requested another attempt in the relentless breakers.
Bell stood her ground against the request: “Somebody’s going to be washed away.”
Although she agreed to return to the surf for the briefest possible interval to wrap the sequence, the resulting angles spoke for themselves.
“When you watch the show, you’ll notice the only angle they use is the side angle because the front-on angle, it was horrific to watch,” Bell shared.

Behind the Scenes of an Award-Winning Comedy
Bell had initially suggested that the challenging sequence should be filmed inside a controlled water tank, though production opted instead for practical ocean filming across coastal Los Angeles.
Despite the frightening ordeal, she acknowledged that the resulting scene looked spectacular on screen.
The dedication behind the production reflects the high stakes surrounding the project, which earned Bell widespread critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination celebrated publicly by Shepard.

💡 Practical filming conditions often push television crews to their absolute physical limits in search of cinematic realism.
🔍 Bell’s candid admission sheds fresh light on the genuine physical risks actors and camera teams encounter even on romantic comedy sets.
📌 As audiences stream the new season, that dramatic coastal sequence carries a far darker subtext than viewers ever anticipated.
