Kristen Bell Reveals Terrifying “Near-Death” Ordeal as Eight-Foot Waves Overwhelmed Netflix Crew on the Set of Nobody Wants This
Kristen Bell has revealed she experienced a genuine “near-death” ordeal alongside ten production crew members after towering eight-foot waves engulfed the coastal set of the hit Netflix series Nobody Wants This.
The 46-year-old actress disclosed the harrowing incident during an appearance on husband Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, recounting how a routine coastal shoot in Los Angeles rapidly descended into life-threatening ocean mayhem.
Joined by co-stars Adam Brody, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons, Bell explained that the sequence required her character, podcast host Joanne, to appear in the surf whilst wearing a partial scuba suit designed to simulate nudity on screen.

High Stakes in the Surf: How an Ocean Scene Turned Chaotic
To capture the scene, Bell had to wade into the ocean until water reached her sternum, accompanied by technical personnel and safety specialists operating under strict safety protocols.
The production organised a dedicated one-for-one stunt pairing system to ensure that every crew member in the water was anchored by a trained stunt professional.
Despite these extensive safety precautions, the sheer velocity and height of the incoming ocean swell swiftly overwhelmed the team.

Bell recalled attempting to recite her Hebrew dialogue while preparing to duck under the impending breakers, only for disaster to strike just as a colossal wave crested above them.
“Just before it’s about to crash, all the stunt people start screaming,” Bell shared, describing the pandemonium as the swell broke over the cast and crew.
Two stunt professionals immediately hoisted the actress into the air to prevent her from being pulled under, whilst other divers pushed camera operators down into the seabed to brace against the brutal undertow.

Submerged Equipment and Frigid Waters
The force of the water wreaked absolute havoc on the production’s technical gear, leaving the primary camera department completely submerged.
- Aaron, the “A” camera operator: Pummelled directly by crushing waves as the ocean swell broke over the rig.
- Critical camera rigs: Both specialised production cameras were driven entirely underwater during the impact.
- Harsh conditions: The cast and crew had to battle freezing water temperatures alongside extreme physical turbulence.
Despite the frightening battering, the director delivered a dreaded verdict immediately afterwards: they had failed to capture the required shot and needed to reset in the surf.

The Battle for Safety: Open Ocean vs Water Tank
Fearing for the physical safety of the crew, Bell pushed back against extended takes in the turbulent ocean.
“Somebody’s going to be washed away,” she warned the production team, insisting on spending the absolute minimum time required in the hazardous surf.
Bell had previously lobbied directors to film the delicate sequence inside a controlled water tank, pointing out the inherent unpredictability of coastal swells.
Although the final broadcast cut ended up looking spectacular, the edit required careful angles to mask how harrowing the actual conditions were on the day.

Bell noted that television audiences will only ever see side-angle footage of the finished scene, as frontal camera perspectives were simply too horrifying to include.
The acclaimed series follows the unconventional romance between Bell’s agnostic podcaster Joanne and Brody’s progressive rabbi Noah Roklov across varied California settings.

The intense physical dedication behind the role reflects the rigorous standards that earned Bell her first career Emmy nomination for the critically acclaimed performance.
Husband Dax Shepard celebrated that professional milestone with a tongue-in-cheek social media tribute highlighting the unglamorous, unseen effort required to pull off such ambitious television.
🌊 The sheer unpredictability of shooting on location proves that even high-budget television productions can rapidly find themselves at the mercy of the elements.
🎬 While the resulting beach scene delivers pure romantic drama on screen, the harrowing ordeal endured by the cast and crew underscores the genuine risks behind the camera.
