Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Announce Brussels Trip for Lost Screen Memorial in First Overseas Engagement Since U.K. Move

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are traveling to Brussels to unveil the powerful Lost Screen Memorial, marking their first joint international trip since leaving California to live in the United Kingdom. The high-profile European visit puts child safety on social platforms front and center.

Scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, the appearance represents a critical milestone for the Duke, 42, and Duchess of Sussex, 45. They will deliver a keynote address in the Belgian capital emphasizing the urgent need for meaningful action against online hazards targeting youth.

The poignant installation consists of 50 smartphone displays, each showing the original lock screen photograph of a child who died due to the harms of social media. The personal images were provided directly by bereaved families who belong to the Archewell Foundation Parents’ Network.

What Is the Lost Screen Memorial?

The memorial previously stood in New York City and at the Place des Nations in Geneva before heading to the European hub. By using actual lock screens, the memorial confronts tech platforms and policymakers with the human lives lost behind online metrics.

During the earlier presentation in New York City, Prince Harry condemned algorithmic negligence and predatory digital spaces:

“These children were not sick. Their deaths were not inevitable—they were exposed to, and in many cases were pushed, harmful content online, the kind any child could encounter. No child should be exploited, groomed, or preyed upon in digital spaces. To the platforms, they may be seen as statistics. To their families, they were cherished and irreplaceable.”

Meghan also shared words that resonated deeply across parental advocacy networks:

“One of the fathers said, ‘All these photographs, as you can see, illustrate the children that are lost. But we don’t have photographs of all the children who will be saved.’”

Expanding the Fight for Youth Digital Safety

Alongside their joint address, Harry will participate directly in a panel discussion titled “Beyond Promises: Building a Digital Future That Works for Children.”

The initiative forms part of the couple’s broader campaign for tech reform, which expanded significantly after they established the Parents’ Network in August 2024. The foundation network offers direct support to families whose children suffered near-fatal injuries, severe mental health battles, or fatal outcomes linked to social networks.

A Coordinated Global Effort

The memorial has built momentum through successive appearances in international diplomatic and cultural centers.

A Major Step Following Family Relocation

The upcoming visit marks the Sussexes’ first foreign tour since permanently exiting their home in California to establish an extended base in Britain. Their children, 7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet, started local schooling shortly after the family’s transatlantic move.

Their only other public working appearance since relocating took place on Oct. 15 in Nottingham, where they toured several community charities before taking a private family break for half-term.

The Brussels trip also arrives in the wake of disturbing news reports surrounding Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr. Recent reporting revealed that Thomas Markle Jr. contacted police and federal authorities regarding alleged illicit digital materials at his father’s residence in the Philippines.

Meghan confirmed she was previously notified about allegations concerning her father through a 2018 letter sent to police, having received assurances that law enforcement looked into the matter. Thomas Markle Sr. has not been charged and has denied possessing abusive materials or abusing minors.

📱 Digital safety for kids continues to ignite fierce debate across kitchen tables and legislative chambers alike.

✨ The Sussexes are betting that direct visual reminders from grieving parents will force platforms into structural changes.
