Haaland Starts While Foden Sits: Villa Park Stunned Early

The headline team news caught supporters off guard before kick-off, as Manchester City welcomed Erling Haaland back into the fold whilst leaving Phil Foden on the bench.

Foden’s exclusion from the starting eleven raised eyebrows across the football world, particularly after his sensational hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League earlier in the week.

Villa capitalised on the tactical gamble within six minutes. Forward Nicolas Jackson broke clear to slide home a clinical finish, igniting the home terraces and forcing City into immediate chase mode.

City responded with intense pressure, rattling the woodwork when Iliman Ndiaye cut inside from the right flank to unleash a curling strike past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Disciplinary drama quickly followed. Central defender Marc Guéhi found himself cautioned by referee Peter Bankes after wrestling Jackson to the turf, while Rayan Cherki went into the book soon after following a tussle with Johan Manzambi.
