California Photographer Survives 197-Foot Cliff Fall in Portugal After Catching a Single Shrub on the Drop

California photographer Kyle Quin Schrock plummeted nearly 200 feet down a sheer cliffside in Madeira, Portugal, before his descent was miraculously halted by a flimsy bush growing out of the rock. The California native survived the terrifying 197-foot drop with multiple fractures, clinging to the fragile vegetation suspended over the abyss while awaiting an emergency helicopter rescue.

Schrock, an adventure photographer known online as @everchanginghorizon with more than one million followers, documented the immediate aftermath of the terrifying incident directly from his hospital bed.

How a Shrub Stopped a 197-Foot Plunge

The accident occurred while Schrock was trekking across the steep volcanic terrain of the Portuguese island of Madeira. As footing gave way, he slid down the rock face, falling approximately 197 feet before the foliage caught his body.

“I thought it was my death, but I eventually got caught on a piece of grass — like a little bush. It did not feel strong enough for me to get caught on. I was very surprised,” Schrock shared from his hospital room.

The relief of stopping mid-fall immediately collided with the reality of his position. He was severely injured, suspended on an unstable precipice, and unable to move without risking another fatal plunge.

A voice from above broke the silence, informing Schrock that emergency teams had mobilized an aerial unit. Yet, survival required extreme mental composure during the wait.

“I just had to last it out and try not to fall off that cliff, because it felt like a really precarious situation. It did not feel like it was strong enough to hold me,” he said.

The Medical Reality Behind High-Altitude Traumatic Falls

A widespread misconception about high-altitude outdoor accidents is that surviving the initial impact means someone is out of immediate danger. In reality, trauma from sudden deceleration or violent impacts against rock faces frequently causes hidden, catastrophic skeletal trauma that threatens the spinal cord and internal organs.

Medical evaluations after Schrock’s airlift revealed the heavy toll of the fall. The photographer suffered broken ribs, a fractured sternum, and a broken back, leaving him in extreme pain and requiring extensive surgical intervention.

The Road to Recovery

Schrock has lived on the road since 2013, traveling internationally and sharing landscape photography with his digital community. That journey is now on an indefinite pause as he prepares for complex spinal surgery and extensive rehabilitation.

His sister-in-law, Tara, launched a verified GoFundMe campaign to help offset mounting medical costs, long-distance medical transit back to the United States, and months of lost income while he recovers from multiple fractures.

Despite the severe physical trauma, Schrock remains focused on his recovery, expressing profound gratitude to be alive after surviving a drop that so easily could have ended his life.

💬 Surviving a 197-foot cliff fall by catching a single bush sounds like something out of a movie, but for Kyle Quin Schrock, every fracture is real proof of an impossible escape.

✨ The global hiking community continues to rally behind the California native as he prepares for upcoming spinal surgery and the long road back home.
