‘She Didn’t Make It to 40’: How the Heartbreaking Loss of Sarah Harding Completely Transformed Kimberley Walsh’s View on Ageing and Motherhood
Every birthday now arrives with an overwhelming wave of gratitude and profound grief for Kimberley Walsh, whose perspective on growing older shifted forever after losing her Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding to breast cancer.
The two pop stars shared an almost identical timeline, born just three days apart in November, yet Harding tragically died in 2021 before she could ever reach the milestone of turning 40.
Now 44, the Bradford-born singer, actress, and Morning Live presenter admits that watching her close friend pass away shattered her illusion of invulnerability, bringing sudden psychological battles she never saw coming.
The Hidden Aftermath: Battling Post-Loss Health Anxiety
Speaking on the Second Act podcast with host Ateh Jewel, Walsh candidly revealed that the immediate aftermath of losing Harding triggered acute health anxieties that altered how she approaches everyday life.
“Losing Sarah was horrendous. It massively changed me,” Walsh explained, recounting how the sudden mortality check forced her to confront her own vulnerability.
“Initially it gave me some major health anxieties, which my doctor friends said was totally normal. I’ve got kids, oh God, I have to live. I have to try to look after myself as best I can.”
Rather than dreading fine lines or milestone numbers, Walsh now views the simple passage of time as an extraordinary gift denied to far too many people across the UK dealing with breast cancer diagnoses.
“It has changed how I feel about growing old,” she reflected. “You have to make the most of every day. I see every single birthday as a massive privilege that I still get to be here. Me and Sarah were the same age. Literally three days apart. And she didn’t make it, obviously, to her 40th. Every birthday hits hard for me.”

Sisterhood Forged in Noughties Stardom
Amid the devastation of Harding’s untimely death, Walsh found an enduring silver lining: a profound, unbreakable reconnection with her fellow bandmates Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, and Nadine Coyle.
After conquering British pop charts together throughout the noughties, the group had scattered into solo careers, families, and separate routines, but tragedy pulled them tightly back into one another’s orbits.
“We’re the closest we’ve been since we were in the throngs of living and breathing every second of each other’s life,” Walsh noted. “They are the few people in my life that have seen all my changes other than my siblings and Justin. It’s lovely.”
Family Milestones and Early Motherhood
Walsh’s grounding anchor through the chaotic waves of fame has remained her husband, former boyband singer Justin Scott, whom she met during the early days of Girls Aloud.
Stepping into a complex domestic role early on, Walsh became a step-mother to Scott’s daughter, Chloe, when she was just 23 years old.
- A 21-year partnership: Walsh regards navigating early step-parenting alongside sudden pop stardom as her single greatest achievement.
- A modern blended family: Together, Walsh and Scott share three young sons, while Chloe is now 27 and shares an unbreakable bond with her step-mum.
- A lasting friendship: Walsh proudly describes Chloe as her “bonus baby” and one of her closest lifelong confidantes.

Rejecting 12-Step Pressure: The Midlife Beauty Reset
Alongside television presenting, Walsh is entering what she terms her “businesswoman era”, partnering with Pure Tone Aesthetics to release an uncomplicated three-step skincare collection designed specifically for hectic schedules.
Reflecting on her stage days, Walsh recalled how different things were when performing nightly arena shows: “We wouldn’t take our make-up properly after gigs. Now one of the main conversations is how we look, everyone feels like they need to be doing more.”
Rather than buying into exhausting cosmetic trends, Walsh decided to strip back the impossible standards modern women frequently encounter.
“A lot of the routines are 10 to 12 steps. I have three kids, there’s not a chance I am ever going to commit,” she admitted frankly.
“I thought I’d love to try and create something science-backed and will actually work, where we can feel like we look the best we possibly can, and is also achievable. That’s what excited me. We can’t really turn the clock back. What we can do is be kind to ourselves.”
💡 Walsh’s shift in perspective offers a poignant reminder that ageing is not a flaw to fix, but an earned milestone to protect.
🔍 By speaking candidly about bereavement, family dynamics, and stripped-back self-care, she continues to challenge the pervasive pressures facing women over 40.
