Taylor Swift has jokingly revealed she became “estranged” from country star Brad Paisley after a 2007 tour prank involving thousands of live insects spiralled into months of sleepless nights. Speaking onstage at Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee, the global superstar reflected on the chaotic rite of passage whilst marking a monumental career milestone.

At 36 years old, the multi-Grammy winner officially became the youngest songwriter ever inducted into the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame during the organisation’s 56th anniversary gala.

Paisley, who invited a teenage Swift to open his Bonfires & Amplifiers Tour nearly two decades ago, watched on as she shared the insect-ridden memory with the star-studded audience.

A Mid-Tour Infestation: Inside the Cricket Prank Gone Wrong

Addressing the gala attendees in an autumnal floral print burgundy velvet dress, Swift recounted the moment Paisley decided to test her resilience on the road. According to Rolling Stone, Paisley orchestrated a backstage scheme that quickly breached the confines of a traditional stage joke.

“He filled my entire tour bus with live crickets, thousands of them,” Swift recalled from the podium.

The infestation proved far more enduring than the perpetrator anticipated, turning Swift’s private living quarters into an unceasing chorus of chirping.

“For months I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted. “All night I considered buying a pet lizard to eradicate the problem.”

Making History at Music City Center

Beyond the tour-bus humour, the evening carried profound emotional weight for the singer-songwriter. Entering the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame places Swift amongst the most celebrated lyrical architects in American popular music.

Prior to her formal acceptance, country artist Lainey Wilson took to the stage to perform an acoustic, stripped-down rendition of Swift’s career-defining 2008 single, “Love Story”.

Swift noted the timing of the honour, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of her self-titled debut record, Taylor Swift.

“I started writing songs when I was a little kid and I knew from the time I wrote my first song that even if it couldn’t be my career, it would be my passion,” Swift told the room. “It would be what I centred my entire life around.”

A Star-Studded Class of Honourees

Swift was not the only luminary celebrated during the organisation’s 56th anniversary gathering. The induction class included several defining voices of the genre:

  • Shawn Camp, celebrated for his enduring contributions to traditional bluegrass and country.
  • Bruce Channel, the veteran voice behind rock-and-roll and pop crossover classics.
  • Lyle Lovett, the four-time Grammy winner revered for his genre-bending Americana arrangements.
  • Lee Thomas Miller, the writer behind dozens of chart-topping radio anthems.
  • George Strait, who was presented with the revered Career Maker Award.

“It’s not lost on me how crazy this is,” Swift added. “I will cherish it forever because Nashville is the place that honed and polished the thing about myself and the thing about my life that I am the most proud of and the most passionate about.”

From Pennsylvania Roots to Global Songwriting Dominance

The Nashville honour caps a relentless sequence of creative achievements for Swift across the calendar year. In June, she made history as the youngest woman inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame.

During that ceremony, Swift paid tribute to her parents, Scott and Andrea Swift, and her brother Austin, recognising the family decision to relocate from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to back her teenage ambitions.

“You’re the reason I am here tonight,” she remarked during the June gathering, calling Nashville “the songwriting capital of the world.”

Her personal and professional calendars have remained equally packed. Following her marriage to NFL tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Swift secured the inaugural Artist Director honour at the MTV VMAs in Los Angeles.

There, she unveiled her self-directed music video for “Patient Zero”, starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson—the lead track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the deluxe release expanding upon her 2025 studio LP.

💡 Swift’s dual hall-of-fame recognitions reinforce an artistic evolution rooted in narrative lyricism, tracing directly back to small-room writing sessions along Music Row.

🔍 From teenage tour bus infestations to breaking ceiling after ceiling in global arenas, her storytelling remains the fundamental core of her career.
