Detectives in Florida spearheaded multi-layered operations targeting violent offenders and fraudulent home repair schemes.

A multi-pronged Hillsborough investigation led by Florida law enforcement has culminated in dozens of criminal arrests, solving a vicious daylight stabbing while dismantling an illicit network exploiting hurricane-ravaged communities. In a rapid series of tactical moves, detectives from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office tracked down an attempted murder suspect across multiple neighbourhoods while simultaneously concluding an intensive four-month sting that caught 50 unlicensed operators in the act.

Undercover operations uncovered convicted felons with backgrounds spanning robbery, kidnapping, and assault attempting to enter residential properties under the guise of post-disaster repair work. Meanwhile, homicide detectives pieced together surveillance records to neutralise an armed suspect who left an acquaintance fighting for his life.

The Violent Ambush on North Central Avenue

The Violent Ambush on North Central Avenue

The violent escalation began just before 3:00 p.m. on 20 October, when emergency dispatchers directed deputies to a residence on North Central Avenue, situated between East 121st Avenue and East 120th Avenue in Tampa. First responders discovered an adult male suffering from multiple catastrophic stab wounds on the property.

Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where medical teams managed to stabilise his injuries following immediate surgical intervention. Investigators confirmed the victim and his attacker were previously acquainted.

Security footage seized from the premises captured the entire confrontation. The video revealed 38-year-old Yoandry Hernandez Penton repeatedly stabbing the victim, striking him across the face, and rummaging through his pockets as he lay incapacitated.

Hernandez Penton immediately commandeered the victim’s vehicle, speeding away from the scene. The manhunt pushed patrol units across county roadways to prevent further violence.

Detectives located the stolen vehicle abandoned on North Hubert Avenue between West Hanna Avenue and West Idlewild Avenue, approximately seven miles away from the initial crime scene. Additional surveillance footage showed the suspect walking away from the abandoned car.

By the evening of 21 October, deputies spotted Hernandez Penton walking along West Hillsborough Avenue. Tactical officers moved in and secured his arrest without further bloodshed.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister confirmed the suspect faces formal charges including attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and cocaine possession.

Operation Bad Builder: Inside the Riverview Undercover Trap

While street detectives tracked the stabbing suspect, a specialised unit concluded a wide-reaching undercover crackdown dubbed “Operation Bad Builder.” Running from 1 June through 2 October, the operation targeted predatory tradesmen targeting homeowners struggling to rebuild following successive hurricane strikes.

Detectives secured a residential staging property in Riverview to act as an undercover command post. Posing as ordinary property owners seeking repairs, officers contacted individuals advertising contracting services online.

The sting focused heavily on targets already linked to complaints filed with local authorities regarding unfinished work and stolen deposits. Over four months, the operation caught 50 unlicensed individuals red-handed, with officials confirming 18 of those arrested are in the country illegally.

Violent Records Concealed Behind Handyman Profiles

Background vetting conducted during the Hillsborough investigation revealed that multiple suspects possessed extensive, violent criminal histories completely hidden from prospective clients.

  • Steven Andreassen: The 56-year-old was arrested after agreeing to carry out electrical work without a licence. Authorities revealed Andreassen had been arrested in June for domestic battery by strangulation, alongside prior out-of-state records featuring kidnapping, robbery, sexual battery, drug violations, and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.
  • Calvin Wilson: Quoting $14,000 for heating and air conditioning installation, Wilson demanded half the sum up front as an initial deposit. Records revealed Wilson was a convicted felon previously arrested in Pinellas County for the identical offence, with previous convictions for robbery, grand theft, and aggravated battery.

Sheriff Chronister highlighted that suspect sales pitches deliberately promised immediate work starts while bypassing mandatory municipal permits and official safety inspections.

Safeguarding Homes Against Predatory Trades

Safeguarding Homes Against Predatory Trades

The findings from Hillsborough County underscore systemic risks that property owners face when hiring unverified tradespeople. Official guidance recommends several core precautions before permitting any individual onto a domestic worksite:

  • Verify Professional Credentials: Never accept verbal assurances; confirm trade licences directly via official regulatory registries such as MyFloridaLicense.com prior to negotiating terms.
  • Mandate Formal Written Contracts: Avoid informal agreements or handshake arrangements that fail to define exact scopes of work, completion schedules, and liability terms.
  • Reject Massive Upfront Cash Demands: Reputable contractors establish milestone-based payment schedules rather than demanding half or full balances before materials arrive on site.
  • Demand Building Permits and Inspection Proof: Refuse any worker who advises skipping standard local building authority permissions, as unpermitted work routinely invalidates home insurance coverage.

💡 Rigorous background verification remains the single most effective defence against contractor fraud and domestic security threats.

🔍 Law enforcement agencies continue reviewing previous complaints to establish whether further victims suffered financial loss at the hands of those apprehended in the sting.
