Florida Jet Crash: Co-Pilot Nathalia Filgueiras Kept Talking to Air Traffic Control Until the Final Seconds as Learjet Descended at 20,000 Feet Per Minute

When a charter Learjet 60 spiraled out of control over southeastern Florida, 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras continued transmitting vital flight data to air traffic controllers right until the final seconds before impact. The catastrophic crash claimed the lives of all nine people on board, leaving federal safety investigators searching through an impact crater for answers.

The tragedy unfolded as the private jet traveled from Austin, Texas, toward North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. Around 12:50 p.m. local time, the aircraft suddenly plunged into a residential neighborhood after encountering severe distress at high altitude.

Audio captured by LiveATC.net documented the escalating emergency in the cockpit. Filgueiras initially reported ice accumulation and turbulence before the situation spiraled beyond recovery, leading to her chilling final transmission: “We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000 feet per minute.”

Inside the Chilling Final Radio Transmission

Mikaela Schluth, who has known the young aviator since middle school, listened to the recovered audio recordings of her friend’s desperate attempt to handle the crisis.

“It was definitely, probably the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I’m just so proud of how she handled it and how she was able to stay calm and give information up until the last minute.”

Despite the extreme physical forces of a 20,000-foot-per-minute dive, Filgueiras maintained communication with controllers on the ground. Her tone shifted rapidly from standard professional updates to acute urgency as the crew lost control of the airframe.

Experience in the Cockpit

Public speculation often surrounds the capabilities of very young pilots in commercial or private charter roles. However, records show Filgueiras brought significant flight experience to the charter operation.

Her mother, Camila Corteleti, confirmed to The New York Times that Filgueiras secured her pilot’s license at just 17 years old and had already logged more than 1,300 hours of flight time. Employed by Florida-based charter firm Upper Jets, she flew alongside pilot Jeff Gregory on the chartered flight.

“She loved the freedom. It was completely different seeing the world from the top.”

The Victims on Board the Flight

The crash resulted in zero survivors among the two crew members and seven passengers. Among those lost was an entire family traveling together to the Bahamas.

The passengers included parents Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, alongside their two young children, Charlie and Emma. Accompanying the family was their nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, and two family friends, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr.

Following the disaster, the grieving families issued a joint statement requesting privacy as they navigate the sudden loss of their loved ones.

Flight Details and Incident Overview

What Investigators Are Searching for at the Crash Site

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the lead federal agency investigating the mechanical and environmental causes of the incident.

NTSB board member Thomas Chapman confirmed that field teams face extensive operational challenges. Wreckage recovery is concentrated around a massive crater formed when the jet slammed into the ground in southeastern Florida.

  • Black Box Search: Investigators are actively sifting through debris to locate a flight data or cockpit voice recorder, though officials have not confirmed whether one was installed on this specific airframe.
  • Mechanical Examination: Recovery crews are cataloging components to determine if control surface failures contributed to the overspeed dive.
  • Weather Reconstruction: Analysts are cross-referencing radar telemetry with the crew’s reports of icing and turbulence along the flight path.

Federal officials stress that understanding the root mechanism behind the sudden dive is critical for general aviation safety nationwide.

💬 The aviation community continues to mourn the nine lives lost aboard the Learjet flight.

📱 As federal officials analyze air traffic data and cockpit recordings, investigators hope to uncover how the sudden dive unfolded.
